Today we are docked at Willemstad, the capital of Curacao. This is the 3rd time on the cruise that we have been here. Was here February 1st and overnight on March 1st & 2nd. I'm putting the background info on this post again in case you missed it or need a review.
CURACAO BACKGROUND INFO:
Curacao is
the largest of the ABC islands at 117 sq miles and is located 40 miles off the
north coast of Venezuela. The population
of the island is about 155,000 and its capital is Willemstad, where we are
docked.
The economy
is based on tourism, trade, shipping services, oil refining & storage, and
international financial services.
620,000 cruise ship passengers call on the port per year. Another 1.8 million fly to the island
annually. The coral reefs are great for
snorkeling and diving. Willemstad is a
very colorful town as you will be seeing in my photos and has lots of
restaurants and shopping. Again, luxury
hotels are near some of the 37 beaches here.
There are also several forts on the island built by the Dutch back in
the mid 1600’s that can be visited.
Water is produced here by reverse osmosis and desalination. Electricity is produced by generation plants
and wind farms. Gas for cooking is
supplied to homes by pressurized containers.
LAST NIGHT:
L to R: Carlos, Dennis, and Mario.
Love this wine
Bavarian cheesecake. Just so-so.
TODAY:
After gym time I walked into town to hit a couple pharmacies. I was off the ship for an hour. The Carnival Horizon ship is here with us again today.
Got more Nasonex for Rebecca and some cream also for her nose. I think Willemstad is my favorite port in the Caribbean. Very colorful, interesting, and an easy walk from the pier right into town. There is a Starbucks, Baskin Robbins, Pizza Hut, Subway, & McDonalds here.
Some shots of Willemstad again from deck 12.This is the flower arrangement I saw them carry on board a few days ago. It is in the atrium.
We will be having cocktails in the Horizon Lounge this evening with Marcia, Barbara Doughten, and Wiley Fisher. Following that dinner will be in Chartreuse (French restaurant). We promised Sofie, the maitre'd we would dine there once before she leaves on vacation. Well, she will be leaving in a few days.
The show tonight at 9:15 is featuring "Pampas Devils", an Argentinian folk show. I think we may have seen their show when on one of our Circle South America cruises. Bio says to expect a traditional gaucho show including the tango dance and skills with bolas.
We will be sailing again at 5pm this evening and tomorrow will be a day at sea. Next port will be Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic on Friday.
