BACKGROUND INFO:
There is not much at the port so I will discuss Tapachula City. This is where I will be doing a walking tour as part of my excursion. It has a population of over 325,000 and is the capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is mostly a modern city and closest to the border with Guatemala. As such it has problems with illegal immigration, drugs, and crime which has led to a very strong, visible police presence. The city has a big Chinese presence as they came here in the early 1900's to work in the coffee plantations. As such, there are many Chinese and other Asian restaurants here. Over 60% of the people here work in commerce and services but agriculture is also important in the region.
LAST NIGHT:
TODAY:
We are in Chiapas, Mexico today.
My 4 1/2 tour departed at 8:45 this morning. The first stop was at the Izapa Archeological Site. This is a very large pre-Columbian site dating back to 850 BC that remained occupied until approximately 1200 AD. It is located on the Izapa River near the base of a volcano, the 6th tallest mountain in Mexico. The site has fertile land around it and is a cocoa producing area.
Miguel was the guide in bus #1 which Marcia and I were on.
Having an issue with the ship's internet. My laptop says it is connected but I'm not able to upload photos and cannot connect to anything. The IT guy, Robert, thinks it is the ship's location and will start working after we sail at 6pm. If it does I will publish this. We have a sea day tomorrow so I will post photos tomorrow, hopefully. Right now it is time for cocktails!!!
