BACKGROUND INFO:

Acapulco is located 240 miles south of Mexico City on a deep, semi-circular bay and has been a port since the early colonial days of Mexico’s history. It is Mexico’s largest and oldest beach and resort city. It came to prominence from the 1940’s through 1960’s as a getaway for Hollywood stars and millionaires. Now most of the tourists here are from Mexico itself. Cancun and Cabo San Lucas are now the choices for American tourists, especially spring break teenagers because the drinking age in Mexico is 18 not 21. With a population of nearly a million, unemployment and poverty have resulted in a large number of locals trying to sell everything on the beaches and streets. Local corrupt police also try to extort money from tourists with threats of jail. Garbage is also filling the bay polluting it and some of the beaches. Violence is also on the rise due to poverty and drugs. Now you know why it is not a great idea to come here. The main attraction of Acapulco is its nightlife. We always sail away long before the nightclubs open, plus we are too old for that nonsense. Probably the most famous attraction here are the La Quebrada Cliff Divers. We saw this on our stop here during our 2017 world cruise.

LAST NIGHT:
Pre-dinner cocktails in Mariner Lounge then dinner in Compass Rose.  Dennis was our waiter again.  Then back to our suite to watch the college national championship game.

ITINERARY CHANGE:
Yesterday evening as we were getting ready for dinner Andy, our cruise director, made a PA announcing that our port call at Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala,  on the 13th has been canceled.  Seems Guatemala is not accepting cruise ships now.  In its place we will now be calling on Puerto Chiapas, Mexico, that day.  It is just a few miles north of the Guatemala and Mexico boarder.  We're never heard of this port let alone stopped there.
Our stop in Nicaragua for the next day had been canceled before the cruise even started.  It is now a sea day.
These ports probable have been canceled as the Guatemalans and Nicaraguans are all up illegally crossing our southern border.

TODAY:
We docked here in Acapulco at 10am.  It was a nice sail in to the harbor and I was out on our balcony during it.  I saw one whale.  At noon it is 90 degrees with lots of sun.  We are not touring again today but I had heard there was a Walmart within walking distance.  So after our treadmill time I went into the cruise terminal to ask about it.  I was told that the Walmart was on the opposite side of the bay so I went right back on board the ship.  This was the first time I was off the ship since San Francisco.  We have been to Acapulco several times and seen the famous cliff divers a couple of times.

The Captain is swinging the ship around 180 degrees so we will be heading back out of the bay this evening when we depart.  Glad he did as our balcony is now facing the cruise terminal and city.
Taxi drivers waving at us as we approached the cruise terminal.
The cruise terminal where we are docking.
                                                       Dancers waiting at gangway.

                                                    Chartreuse, the French restaurant

Spending the afternoon in our suite.  Rebecca playing solitaire on her Kindle and I am working crossword puzzles.  Maybe watch a movie also.  Plan for this evening is pre-dinner cocktails in the Mariner Lounge followed at 7pm with dinner in Prime 7.  Tonight's show is the comedian again so not going to that.
